Here’s an overview of your Online Journalism Political News Project.
You are expected to write a 500 – 700 word story that demonstrates your ability as a reporter and writer. You’ll be expected to integrate interactive elements, including links, photos and/or video, if possible. I’m challenging you to create a story that will be compelling to readers. Talk to experts, real people. You must go beyond any personal analysis. Back it up with interviews and credible sources.
It is possible that your story will be posted on the NTNewsNet.com website, and possibly in the NT Daily so please make it clear that you clearly relate to you sources that this story may be published.
Requirements:
* 500 -700 word story
* Video segments minimum 1 minute, but you must include a summary of the story in words to post along with the story.
* Audio/Video slideshows: No more than 2 minutes.

(Denton, September 30, 2008) Here’s an overview of the ‘beats’ that we are looking to cover over the next 45 days. Since many of these categories are broad, we may look at narrowing down these ‘beats’ into specific story ideas.
These stories and/or interactive packages will be assigned to you. You will be responsible to writing and reporting them. If you’re planning to take pictures, you’ll have to shoot and edit photos, then post them in a slide show.
Your job as an online journalist would be to write news and analysis stories that could be published on the new NTNewsNet.com website. Your job will be how are these candidates/groups/media using the web to reach their supporters, their readers/viewers. What interactive tools and elements are they using? What’s working? What’s not?
Here’s overview of beats:
* Candidates’ Websites: Obama & McCain
* Political Parties: DNC/RNC/others?
* Affiliated Groups/Special Interests/527s: For example, MoveOn.org,RockTheVote.org , HipHopSummitActionNetwork, etc.
* Issues: Economy, Iraq War, Health care, Race & gender, Education, Gun Control, Immigration, Abortion, Supreme Court appointments
* Media:
Major Print: Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal
Major Broadcast: ABC. CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, MSNBC
Major Web: Politico, Slate, etc.
Your stories would be 300 – 500 words. They should include links. You may do a podcast or slide show.
